Grayling High School
The Grayling Varsity Football team traveled to Cheboygan on Friday, September 15 for a NMFC Legends Division game. It was a hard fought, back and forth game with Grayling holding off a late Cheboygan surge to win 32-28.
On the opening possession of the game the Vikings drove 65 yards down the field and scored off a 21 yard touchdown reception for Justin Nicholas to Zack Osga. Following a Cheboygan fumble on their opening drive, the Vikings quickly moved down the field and scored on a short run by Justin Nicholas. Late in the first quarter Cheboygan would finally get on the board after returning an interception by Justin Nicholas for a touchdown. Grayling would respond to that by moving 87 yards down the field scoring on a 11 yard touchdown run by Zack Osga. On their next possession Cheboygan scored on a short one yard run to put the score at Grayling 20, Cheboygan 14 with about 10 minutes left in the first half. After a few back and forth possessions Cheboygan would score on a 43 yard touchdown pass to put the score at 20-20 going into the half.
Just like they started the first half, the Vikings would score on their opening possession. This time it came on a 21 yard touchdown run by Justin Nicholas. After exchanging possessions the Vikings would score again on a short touchdown run by Justin Nicholas to put the score at Grayling 32, Cheboygan 20 with about 10 minutes left in the game. Cheboygan would score on their next two possessions to bring the score within 4 points. The Vikings would convert a couple crucial first downs on their next drive to run the clock out and secure a 38-32 victory.
Justin Nicholas would finish the game with 364 yards passing and two touchdowns to go along with 122 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Zack Osga had 164 yards receiving and two touchdowns to go along with 40 yards rushing and one touchdown. Nick Hunter had 76 yards receiving on five catches, Ken Dutton had 58 yards receiving on seven catches and Chris Hunter caught five passes for 51 yards. On defense, Logan Joseph had 12 tackles, Jaden Gauthier had 11 tackles and Jacob Macfalda had 10 tackles.
The Varsity Football team will take their undefeated record to Boyne City on Friday, September 22, where they will face a touch Boyne team that is also undefeated on the season. The game starts at 7:00pm.
