The Grayling Varsity Football traveled to Thirlby Field to take on TC St. Francis on Saturday, September 30. Grayling took an early lead but could not hold on as the Gladiators would go on to win 49-22 to remain undefeated on the season.
The Vikings opened the game with a short touchdown run by Justin Nicholas that capped off an 8 play 88 yard drive. After a turnover by each team, TC St. Francis would score off a 15 yard touchdown pass to tie the game up at 8 with about 3 minutes left in the first quarter. On their next possession the Vikings would once again march down the field this time scoring on another short run by Justin Nicholas. The score was 14-8 after the first quarter. After trading possessions again, TC. St. Francis drove down the field and scored on a 15 yard run to tie the game up at 14-14 with 5 minutes left in the first half. A short Grayling punt set up TC. St. Francis with very short field position. The Gladiators would quickly capitalize off the short field scoring in just two plays to take a 21-14 lead. After another Viking turnover on their next possession, the Gladiators would score on a short touchdown run to take 27-14 lead going into halftime.
TC St. Francis would open the second half with a four yard touchdown run to increase their lead to 35-14. After a Grayling turnover on downs, the Gladiators would score again this time on a 45 yard touchdown run to put the score at 42-14 halfway through the third quarter. After trading possessions on the next two series, Grayling scored on a 10 yard touchdown pass from Logan Joseph to Leland Hunter to put the score at 42-22 with four minutes left in the game. TC St. Francis would tack on a late score to win the game 49-22.
Justin Nicholas finished with 229 passing yards and two rushing touchdowns. Logan Joseph had 33 yards rushing and a passing touchdown, Zack Osga had 76 yards rushing, Chris Hunter had 130 receiving yards, Nick Hunter had 91 receiving yards and Leland Hunter had 23 receiving yards and one touchdown.
The Varsity Football team (4-2 overall, 2-2 NMFL) will host Elk Rapids on Friday, October 6. The game starts at 7:00pm.
