Game Recap

The Grayling Varsity Football team had their annual homecoming game spoiled by Elk Rapids on Friday, October 6. After taking an early lead, the Vikings could not hold off Elk Rapids who would go on to win 23-8 and move to 6-1 securing themselves a spot in the playoffs.

On Grayling’s first possession of the game, Justin Nicholas hit Rickey Heavner on a deep route for an 80 yard touchdown to put the Vikings up 8-0. After a turnover on downs by the Vikings, Elk Rapids quickly drove down the field scoring on a three yard touchdown pass with less than a minute left in the 1st quarter to put the score at Grayling 8, Elk Rapids 7. A fumble by the Vikings on their next possession would lead to a short field goal for Elk Rapids to put them up 10-8. The teams would trade possessions on their next few drives and at halftime the score was still 10-8.

On their second possession of the second half, the Elks would attempt a long field goal but it went wide right. After another Grayling punt, Elk Rapids scored on a 16 yard touchdown run to put the score at 16-8 with about 3 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. A sack and a few costly penalties would stall a promising Viking drive on their next possession. Elk Rapids would capitalize on the Viking’s miscues and score on a nine yard touchdown run to put the score at 23-8 with 5 minutes left in the game. An interception by Elk Rapids on Grayling’s next possession once again stalled a promising drive. After another missed field goal by the Elks, Grayling took over again but failed to complete a crucial first down to extend their drive. Elk Rapids would kill the last few minutes of the game to take a 23-8 victory dropping the Vikings to 4-3 and forcing them to win their next two games to clinch a playoff spot.

Justin Nicholas finished the game with 391 yards passing and one touchdown, Logan Joseph had 12 catches for 169 yards, and Rickey Heavner had 8 catches for 145 yards and one touchdown.

The Varsity Football team moves to 4-3 overall and 2-3 in the conference. They travel to take on Benzie Central next Friday, October 13. The game starts at 7:00pm.
